The number one question I get asked is how should I prepare for this shoot? What do I need to wear? What should I bring? So this post is for all of you out there who find themselves asking these questions.
1. Your nervous, that’s OK.
I will be completely honest with you, sometimes I get nervous to. We are human it happens. What I have found works for me is jamming out to something in the car. Silly I know. But It Works! for me at least. Before a shoot it’s very likely you can find me singing at the top of my lungs to Let it Go or Eye of the Tiger. So maybe this doesn’t work for you…. take a deep breath find something that does work. Plus i’m here to reassure you that in the end there really is nothing to be nervous about. Sometimes I get nervous and than afterward I think.. That was sooo FUN why was I nervous…
2. What to wear.
Before I became a photographer I had not idea what to wear to photo shoots either. It can get complicated. You like one shirt but that doesn’t match the skirt that you like or you like a certain color but you don’t think it will look good in pictures. Happens to the best of us. My best advice… BE YOU. You don’t want to wear something, get your pictures, and think WHO IS THAT? Make it your style, your image. Make it you. If it’s family pictures I highly recommend wearing complimentary colors. Otherwise it might look funny. Actually it will look funny. Another bit of advice. ASK ME. I will tell you what looks good and what looks bad.
3. What about props.
I love props. There is just something about them that makes a photo have a more personal feel. Do I have props? Yes, I have a few. Should you bring props? Yes, because even though I have props they might not fit your style. Feel free to bring your own sheet music, books, sport equipment, family heirloom. It will all add to your photographs.
I have a handful of favorite locations but if you have a location that you love by all means lets go there. Location is very important. It sets a the mood for our entire shoot. So lets find a good one that fits you. There is a big difference between a shoot in the forest and one in a gym.
Most importantly just get excited. This is going to be fun!
